Menopause is when a woman does not have a period for a year. In Greek, Mens (month) means Pause (to stand). In menopause, the follicles in the ovaries are depleted and the amount of estrogen decreases accordingly. The World Health Organization defines menopause as the permanent cessation of menstruation with the loss of function of the ovaries. The average age of menopause in Turkey is between 46-48 years. The average age of menopause all over the world is between the ages of 45-55. The cessation of menstruation under the age of 40 was previously defined as early menopause, but today it is defined as premature ovarian failure.
